Creating a seed mat!

I recently saw what appeared to be 2 bits of kitchen roll type paper, with seeds sandwiched between the two, all packaged up and on sale in  shop. This got me thinking, when I was eating a salad..(yes, this does happen sometimes) I get bored of cherry tomatoes quickly unless doused with salt and pepper (please, don't do that at home kids!). Someone on a gardening group said that they would not germinate if they were supermarket tomatoes because they are specially bred. This didnt sound correct to me, so I thought I'd try an experiment.

Now, remember! These are Eljay's how to's, I'm in no way an expert and in no way know something you don't. But if it works for me...I'll share with you how I did it.

So I took some seeds and smeared them in their jelly blobby goodness onto some tissue paper.
I then left this to dry. (I also warned other people likely to come into contact with this what it was, as at a glance it looks a bit like a nosebleed tissue!)

When dry...I took the tub the cherry tomatoes came in (recycling is gooood) filled it with potting soil
and cut the tissue paper into little squares and laid them on the soil. Then covered it over and gave it a good water. See diagram above...

It's taken a few weeks but there are finally starting to germinate. As soon as they are big enough to not require a £300 macro lens on a camera I will add the picture to this how-to just for fun.
